My name is Tobias Rüetschi aka tober. I am a musician and artist based in Bern and Winterthur, Switzerland.
My practice is mostly sonic, spans coding, explorations of online culture, sound performance, installation and multimedia works. I often develop custom software and instruments that reinterpret existing technologies.
I believe that knowing how it works is not the only way of understanding a piece of technology. My musical practice explores alternative and playful ways of interaction in a performative way.
Through creative misuse of technology and non-destructive hacking I create non-linear feedback systems. I use them in collaborative concert or installation settings. The inspiration for these setups comes from my research into technology as a cultural practice. Technological artefacts aren‘t neutral tools, and I am interested in how they embody cultural assumptions about control and expertise. These ideas shape accessibility, influence how we learn to interact with technology and who is perceived as capable of using them.
I studied Fine Arts in Zurich and Sound Arts in Bern and am currently pursuing an artistic research PhD in Music between Bern, Switzerland, and Freiburg, Germany.
