Radical Choices

Radical Choices is a browser-based serious game developed as part of the Gaming against Extremism project, which is supported by the Swiss Confederation and the Risk Dialogue and Dezentrum foundations. The aim of the game is to raise awareness among young people in an interactive and playful way about how various extremist ideologies work online, and how to protect oneself from radicalization.

The game consists of 30 decision rounds (comparable to weeks or interactions in everyday life). Players encounter characters such as the Lama (“Lama Warriors,” right-wing extremists) or the Pizza (“Pizza Rebels,” left-wing extremists), each of whom tries to win the trust of the young people. In each round, players choose between two responses, for example, “show solidarity” or “distance yourself.” In addition, various radical narratives are explained during the course of the game, which players can then examine in the following messages.

This mechanism reflects typical radicalization strategies, such as peer pressure, simplistic solutions, accusations, or negative images. The goal is to survive the 30 weeks without becoming radicalized or neglecting any of one's own needs (community, order, entertainment), which are represented by a fictional radicalism bar and a needs indicator.
